Vinci 4/4 Size Student Violin (Bow, Carrying Case) Review

Vinci 4/4 Size Student Violin (Bow, Carrying Case)
Average Reviews:

It sounds great and is a great value for the $60 price. However, we bought it as a surprise for our child and to make it ready to use when unwrapped, I did the pre-assembly (attaching the bridge, tuning/tightening the strings). The instruction book says (paraphrasing) "take the violin to your music instructor." The website for the company is unhelpful in further information. But again, once ready to play, it's great. I just wish the instruction book and website were more helpful.

Cecilio CEVN-2BK 4/4 Full Size Electric Silent Solidwood Violin w/ Ebony Fittings in Black Metallic Review

Cecilio CEVN-2BK 4/4 Full Size Electric Silent Solidwood Violin w/ Ebony Fittings in Black Metallic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been playing violin for three years now and I felt it was time to take the plunge into the electric violin world. I was also looking for something relatively inexpensive since my main violin is on the higher end. This was the perfect choice.
Sound - Try as it might, it just can't replicate the sound of an acoustic violin (which I wasn't looking for anyway). It can get pretty close though and all in all the sound is nice. The pickup is good, not the best quality but it does its job pretty well. As for being silent, it is quieter than an acoustic with a mute, but not completely silent.
Construction/Look - The body is nice and solid unlike some of the cheap online instruments you can get. The finish is well done and the ebony pieces with mother of pearl inlays look rather nice. The inlays fall flush too, nothing sticking out at all. The pegs don't slip at all. The only thing I could find wrong with the construction was the bridge. It was a bit too high but that is a very easy fix. A little bit o sanding and its good to go.
Extras - It came with a bow, aux cable, headphones, case and light rosin.
- The rosin I put aside because I prefer dark rosin.
- The headphones are fairly cheap but they work well enough that I'll use them until they break. Don't expect an amazing sound quality.
- The aux cable is pretty standard and I had no issue with it.
- The case is actually pretty decent. It lacks the durability and quality of higher end cases, but it does what it is supposed to and protects your violin. The zippers on mine get stuck once and a while.
- The bow is not half bad either. The wood work and inlay are well done. I think the rest of the bow is brazilwood. The bow doesn't stick when tightening or losing it like cheaper bows.
I definitely recommend this if you are considering an electric violin and aren't looking to spend $800. You'll get more than you paid for and be very happy with it.

Cecilio CVN-500 Ebony Antique Finish Flamed Full Size 4/4 Orchestra Violin with Case and Accessories Review

Cecilio CVN-500 Ebony Antique Finish Flamed Full Size 4/4 Orchestra Violin with Case and Accessories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received this outfit today. Here are my first impressions:
Looks: The violin has a nice antique finish. The sides and back are nicely flamed. It looks like it is a much more expensive unit. It seems to be built well - I don't have to worry about the back splitting in half at some point.
Sound: The strings that come with are satisfactory, but I would recommend replacing them with some Dominants. The original strings sound good once you rosin the bow for about five minutes (see below), but they are still not very responsive. The violin holds its tune well.
Accessories: This unit comes with two bows. The product description says they are real wood, but they sure do feel a lot like plastic. You really have to rosin them up forever before they will produce any sound. I would suggest buying a half decent bow for thirty bucks at the local music shop. I would also replace the rosin that comes with, as it seems to be a bit "dried out". The extra bridge and pitch pipes are a bonus. The case is surprisingly nice and protects the instrument well.
Overall, I don't think you can beat the price for this unit. If you are willing to replace the strings and bow for an extra sixty dollars, this outfit will still be much cheaper than others on the market. It is a great value for the price.

Everest EZ Series Shoulder Rest for 4/4 Violin Review

Everest EZ Series Shoulder Rest for 4/4 Violin
Average Reviews:

I really like the Everest shoulder rest, because it grips the violin well and doesn't fall off. I've had Kun pads in the past, but in recent years they changed the type of rubber they use, and it causes the pad to slip off the violin frequently. The Everest also has solid rubber feet, so it poses no danger to the violin; on a Kun, the rubber will eventually wear down to bare metal. The Everest appears to be well-made, and even has thicher shoulder padding- very comfortable!

Full Size Electric Violin with Case and Accessories Review

Full Size Electric Violin with Case and Accessories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, right from the start, for this price you don't expect an Amati in yer mailbox, yes? That being said; this thing comes SOOO close to being a very nice instrument, and if you decide that the price and rather beautiful and intrigueing design make it a "what the hell, why not?" purchase, a few extra bucks spent now will save you a lot of pain and aggrevation when it arrives. Because right out of the box this thing is a BRUTE. I've played guitar, bass and violin for 42-odd years and so brought a certain amout of hand stength and callouses to this project and notwithstanding the difficulty this instrument posed at first I played my callouses off and back on a dozen or more times while adjusting to it and deciding what it needed. I shall try to address the questions and gripes I"ve gathered from chats posted about it and the suggestions I would make.
First; go ahead and order fine-tuners for all the strings - the pegs are synthetic and will slip and slip and after you've wrestled them into something near pitch you won't want to jack around with them much more. There seems to be a bulge around the end of the pegs that keeps them from seating well, but if you CAREFULLY shave that off with a good sharp knife and sand it so that it's rather rough the peg will be more manageable (worked for ME, anyway.)
Next, while you're still adding stuff to your shopping-cart, add one of those nifty self-adjusting bridges that Glaesel makes. The violin comes with a very high bridge that will pull the neck out of true and reqires a grip like an anconda to play, so get a medium or low bridge. I put a medium on mine and it works just fine. And the neck seems to be returning to straight with the more direct pull. Low just might be TOO low. The nut is fairly high anyway, but unless you are VERY good with tools I recommend that you just learn to live with it.
Right, the shoulder-pad. You'll want one, because this beast weighs a bit more than a standard fiddle. The pad it comes with will not stick with the included velcro pads, but a good stout elastic band or even a thick rubber band wrapped around the chin-rest will hold it on and keep you from looking (and feeling) like you've been hit with a tire-iron.
Now the good stuff about this fiddle- the electronics are very nice and produce a good sound both from the earphones and the main outlet. And though I've read some negative comments about the bow I've found it to be very nice indeed, worth the price of the whole kit. Too many of these "novice" packages come with a useless, flabby fiberglass stick with hair on but this Brazilwood bow I found to be responsive and well-balanced. Bearing in mind that bows are as individual as people and what works for me you might find atrocious. The design I still find as nice as at first sight, with the attention to detail and scrollwork paticularly fine for a synthetic.
Acoustically the tone is a bit strident, as you might expect, but a mute (odd as that might seem for a "silent" violin) will take some of the harshness out of the tone without rendering it too quiet for practical purposes. Every style of mute (heavy rubber, wood or wire) will change the tone in a different way so you just have to find what sounds best to you.
Finally, with all of the cute stuff available you might want to opt for a wood chinrest and tailpiece instead of the synth stuff on it, but ultimately that depends on how well you like this instrument and how much you like to individualize yer axe. (mine are on order as I write this.)
Long-winded as this has been, I hope that it has been of some help, or may spare some long-suffering parent the torture of hearing the groans, squeaks and howls of the novice fiddler...

Jade L'Opera JADE Rosin for Violin, Viola, and Cello Review

Jade L'Opera JADE Rosin for Violin, Viola, and Cello
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My suggestions to parents who have kids who play violin:
1. as they get older, get them a good quality instrument. Rent one, don't buy one - the rentals are so much better quality than what you'd probably budget for. I am currently renting a better-quality instrument than I played as a teen - as a child I guess it doesn't matter, but as I got older, a better instrument would have been nice.
2. get them a good quality rosin. As an adult I have come to appreciate spending alittle more money for things that are worth it - and this rosin is one of them...to a certain point. I got tis exact rosin for $10.86 and although that is about 10x more than I'd have ever expected to pay for rosin, I think the results are well-worth it. (although after I posted my raving review the price hovered at $16-$17 for it, which i think is HORRIBLE. I'm morally opposed to buying more of this rosin until the prices goes back down!!!!
3. get them a couple private lessons from a teacher who cares. and believes in them.
This is why I like this rosin:
1. The higher quality makes the bow stick better to the strings
2. overall it helped produce a nicer tone ( I changed just the rosin, not the violin. I used the regular free rosin that the rental company gave me for a little while, then decided to try this rosin. so only the rosin has changed, not the quality of the violin)
However:
1. It does give off a lot of dust - i don't know if this amount is typical of higher-quality rosins, but I find myself cleaning more off my strings and violin at the end of my sessions now.
2. I do find that it wears off surprisingly quickly. Let's say I practice a little over an hour, I might re-apply once or twice. I can't remember that clearly but I think when I was younger and playing in the orchestra, I don't know that I even re-applied the rosin during a performance, which would be about that same amount of time. But 1)maybe my memory fails me and 2) maybe the lesser the quailty rosin the more it sticks to the bow and not the strings or 3) maybe I was just not that into playing that I didn't care enough to re-apply.
Overall: This rosin impressed me. I really think it changed the sound that was coming out of the instrument. It inspired me to start recording myself and send to my parents, who were thrilled that all those years of pestering me to 'practice my violin' have finally come to fruition.

And it's not just the looks, this electric violin sounds surprisingly good when using headphones or amplifier. The bow is nice. It definitely needs a shoulder rest, some better rosin and a better set of strings, but for the price, this is wonderful. The line out jack does not seem to work (or I couldn't figure it out), but the phones jack works just fine for the amp. The price was even better after google'ing it ;) Nice as a gift to my dad.

I purchased this for my son to begin violin lessons. When it arrived, it was not set up. If you don't know how to set it up yourself, it can cost around $80 to have a pro do it for you. My sons violin teacher kept it for a week trying to get it tuned. He couldn't do it. He said that once he gets 3 strings tuned in, then the 4th goes out. He hated to admit it to me, but he said that it was just a poor quality violin.
He recommended a Suzuki beginners violin. I returned my Cecilio and got a Suzuki. Wow! What a difference! It arrived set up, and tuned. The quality was obvious. My sons teacher was very pleased! Check out the Suzuki's!

This was not a good purchase! I took the violin to school and my teacher told me I would have to get a better one if this was something I really wanted to do and be good at. He said it would be ok for now but that the quality was poor. You must purchase extra string because, my strings break at least once a week.

Full Size Violin 4 X 4 with Case - Black Color Review

Full Size Violin 4 X 4 with Case - Black Color
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using the violin now for two days (about 2 hours total during that span). I ordered it on Wednesday, and it was at the doorstep the following Tuesday. Pretty good shipping time, I can't complain.
So just like everyone says, there is some assembly required (and Austin Bazaar is up-front with this information). Basically, when you receive the violin, you will get five things: the violin itself, the bridge for the violin, the bow, a rosin piece, and a case. The assembly of the bridge is fairly straight-forward, but it would be nice if Austin Bazaar would mention somewhere how to do it (a few pictures and some instructions would be enough). To make it simple for anyone who buys this violin, do the following to assemble the bridge:
1. Set the violin on the floor, strings facing up.
2. Find the f-shaped holes on the main body of the violin. Each hole should have two notches in them (one on the left, one on the right).
3. Look at the bridge (the little wood piece with the four holes on it). There should be two little feet (the bottom), and a curved edge (the top). On the top (curved part), if you look at it from the front, you should see that one side of the curve is higher up than the other. That side goes on the side of the violin with the lower/thicker strings. The low side of the curve goes on the side with the higher/thinner strings.
4. Now you know how the bridge lines up. Slide the bridge under the strings (loosen them if it is too hard to slide it under; don't force it too much). The feet of the bridge touch the violin body, the curve touches the strings (don't put the strings through the holes in the bridge, they go right on top of the bridge, and rest along the curve).
5. Once the bridge is in place, tighten the strings enough to hold the bridge in place without your help. As you tighten the strings, make sure that the feet of the bridge stay flat against the body of the violin. If they start to tilt up, lightly slide them back to a flat placement.
6. Now, just tune the violin. The strings tune to (in order of lowest/thickest to highest/thinnest) G, D, A, and E (perfect 5ths between each string). Don't tune it too quickly, or the string may snap. You may want to tune the strings 3/4s of the way and then leave it for a few minutes, and then come back and slowly finish the tuning (if you've ever tuned a guitar, this is very similar). Once you get the strings properly tuned, they WILL un-tune themselves for a bit. This is day two, and I've tuned the violin probably 15 times so far. At first, it wouldn't tune at all, but it started to keep after a few tunes. Also, as Austin Bazaar says, push the pegs inward as you tune (not too hard though, as it can warp the wood slightly, and de-tune your other strings), and this should help. If that doesn't work, put some rosin on the pegs. As a last resort, us peg drops (which SHOULD have been included, but oh well).
7. Tighten your bow string fairly tight using the screw at the bottom of the bow (don't go crazy, just tight enough that the bow-string will barely touch the bow when you put pressure on it). Take your rosin out, and use some sandpaper to grit it up a bit. Once you have done that, slowly rub it up and down the length of the bow, stopping at each end and using the bow string to grit the rosin up a bit more (make a polishing sort of motion on the rosin). The first time you do this can take some work (10-15 minutes).
8. You should be all set to start playing! From here, you need to learn how to play, and that is more in-depth that I care to go on my Amazon.com violin review. :)
So in summary, if you have always wanted to play the violin, but aren't sure how much time you will dedicate towards it, this is a pretty good way to try it out. If I'm still playing in 2-3 years, I'll probably look at something a bit more refined, but until that time, this violin looks as if it will do a great job (perhaps I will even pass it on to my first child when I have one, as a starter instrument)!

After receiving the shipment in absolutely perfect condition and on the exact day for my daughter's birthday, it was absolutely beautiful! I check it over for any imperfections and the only thing was a couple of broken hairs from the bow, otherwise, I did not see anything else. After that, it was kept in the case for about a week until my daughter's beginning class started. Yes, neither one of us has had any violin experience!
Okay, class day came and the instructor tried to tune the violin. She asked if I had it "set up" and I had no idea what she was talking about. She was able to tune all but one string fearing that the whole thing would break because it kept making this creaking and cracking sound when she turned the knob and said that it wouldn't stay. Then she told me if she broke it, it would cost me a couple hundred dollars to have it replaced! (Uh, no thank you!) She also said that the bridge was way too high.
I guess my next step is to go to a violin shop to see if they can "set it up" so that one string can tune and shorten the bridge. Other than that, there were no other problems with it. My daughter still can practice on it and it sounds great other than that one string (the thinnest one) that won't tune.

This is the fourth violin that I bought, starting from the 1/4 size, 1/2, 3/4, now the full size for my kids. (Sure they grow fast !!) The price is fantastic for a violin of this quality, the ordering process is a breeze, and the delivery is super fast. Ordered on Thursday evening, and is being pulled and ship out to UPS at 1:00 in the morning. The package arrived on Saturday in perfect condition, well packed in properly protected box. The only minor point is the violin was not tuned, as compared to the three that I bought before, and the description did not really show the exact color of the wood stain. I found it some come with more brownish red, and some are in maroon brown. Definitely a great violin with beautiful sound for such a low price.

Cecilio CVN-100 4/4 Full Size Rosewood Violin Review

Cecilio CVN-100 4/4 Full Size Rosewood Violin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of course it is obviously manufactured.
Cons: The back is made of 4 combined pieces instead of traditional 2 pieces, the bridge is a little soft, the fine tuners don't feel too study, and there is knot in the wood of the neck for mine.
Pros: One of the best beginner instruments around. Not only was it already strung with the bridge attached, they even sent us spare strings (which we ended up needing) and an extra bridge with the package. Many experienced violin players have looked at it and said that it was a fine new instrument. No cut backs, no plastic. The entire violin is wood and a slight bit of metal. It resonates like a violin should and everything is fine and dandy.
I'd give it a 4.5, but I'll round down to 4 stars because if you really tried you could probably find a decent used violin for less. (and with violins, if they are treated well, they get BETTER with age)

Violinsmart Natural Color Student Violin Size 1/4 Review

Violinsmart Natural Color Student Violin Size 1/4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this violin to start my daughter on, and it's been perfectly serviceable. The natural wood and real horsehair bow were a pleasant surprise in an instrument with this price point, and the instrument itself exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations. I grew up a violinist, so I knew I would not be getting the highest quality instrument for this price, but for a child just starting to play, you want an instrument that you won't have weep over if it does happen to get dropped facedown on the floor, or if your child decides to move on to piano or flute instead. This violin fit the bill. It is well-enough put together to learn on, stay in tune, and have passable tone. The only problem I had was that the mass-produced bridge had to be filed down by a luthier to fit the strings properly, but that cost me less than $20 and made all the difference. The case was of higher quality than I expected and my daughter loves the backpack straps. Good starter package.
